Microsoftのレイモンド・チェンが、キーボードが効かないと苦情を言うユーザの話を書いている。もちろん、それはつながってないせいだ。しかし、ちゃんとつないでますかと聞こうものなら、｢彼らはまったく侮辱されたように感じ、憤然として言うのだ。『もちろんつながってるさ! 私をバカだと思ってるのか?』 そして実際確かめてもみない｣
｢そんな風に言うのではなく、こう言ってみることだ｣とチェンは提案している。｢『ああ、接点にゴミがついて接続が弱くなることがあるんです。1度コネクタを抜いて、接点のゴミを吹き払ってから、つなぎ直してみてもらえますか?』
すると彼らは机の下にもぐり込んで、それをつなぎ忘れていた(あるいは間違ったポートにつないでいた)ことに気付き、ホコリを吹き払ってから接続し、そして『あっ、直ったみたいだ。どうもありがとう』と答えるのだ｣
この言い方はユーザに何かを確認してもらいたい場合の多くに使うことができる。設定を確認してくださいという代りに、｢ソフトウェアが設定を間違いなく記録するように｣、設定をいったん変えてからまた元に戻してみてくださいと言うのだ。
